What if we could rate the family trees that we gather information from?
Would this be a helpful tool in making sure that accuracy is more of a priority on these family history sites that tout the importance of their family trees?
Also, what if we could rate profiles on various genealogy websites? Never responded to my message? Took my public photos and put them behind a private family tree? One star!
Would this be petty or would it be a way to profoundly change the way we communicate with other genealogy site users for the better?
The truth hurts.
And the truth is, some folks need a gentle reminder to clean up their genealogical acts. Yes, everyone knows ad nauseam that we should always be mindful of our sources and double-check everything.
The fact is, some genealogy website users are offering prime bits of well-researched and sourced data on their family trees while others offer dust. Yet, they have the same access.
I propose a rating system whereby one can aim for the lowest possible confidence in accuracy and engagement as possible, but we’re all going to know about it and proceed accordingly.
Of course, there’s always the chance to redeem that rating by improving (cleaning up) inaccurate family trees, thanking the users who provide the photos and stories that flesh out the stories of our ancestors’ lives, and just being better genealogists or enthusiasts. It helps everyone.
Or does it?
Just wondering…
This us our situation.
