Benjamin Harrison V (1726-1791) was a wealthy planter, elected member of the House of Burgesses, elected governor of the state of Virginia, signer of the Declaration of Independence, father of the ninth president of the United States, slave holder as documented above, and my ancestor.
This is our situation…
May all of the descendants who seek to learn more about their lineage find it and more. Reclamation is now. May the souls of those who toiled in bondage be ever free and rest in peace and power.
The Genealogy Situation Room
I hope their legacy is known to progeny. Did the enslaved and their descendants use Harrison as their surnames? Was he also a Revolutionary War patriot, military or civilian?

A number of the descendants of the enslaved and Berkeley Harrisons (including mine) have used that surname. Also, a few of the other surnames of the families include Layton, Quivers, and White. No doubt, there are a host of others.
Benjamin Harrison V, while a patriot, to my knowledge did not actively engage on the battlefield. In 1781, Benedict Arnold “visited” Berkeley Plantation and wreaked havoc.

Accounts say that he was headed there to capture Benjamin Harrison, who fled with his family through a tunnel.* That may have been as much engagement as was seen by Harrison.
*Perhaps this was the same tunnel, from the kitchen to the main house, where the enslaved were required to whistle as they brought the food through. This was to ensure that they were not stealing/eating the food themselves…
Thanks for stopping by!
