Historical Family Photos: Mary Eliza Balkcum Aldridge (1829-1924) and Fannie Kennedy Aldridge (1870-1920)

Here we have a wonderful photo of a matriarch and her daughter-in-law, taken in 1924.

Mary Eliza Balkcum was born in 1829 in Sampson County, NC, to Nancy Balkcum, a white woman, and an unknown black man. Mary Eliza would marry Robert Aldridge (1819-1899) in 1850. They would have at least eleven children. Their son Matthew Aldridge (1857-1920) was married to Fannie Kennedy, pictured with Mary Eliza.

Robert and Mary Eliza Aldridge’s daughter, Amelia Aldridge Brewington (1855-1895), was my second great-grandmother.

Mary Eliza lived to be a remarkable 94 years old; this photo was taken in the final year of her life. Historical family photos truly bring life to bare facts.
